Champagne Club by Richard Juhlin
This is the first vintage of the extremely exciting project that 15 competent growers created together where they made 1600 magnum bottles of a cuvée from all 17 Grand Crus that are together for the first time. Not even Dom Pérignon has created such a wine as, for historical reasons, Premier Cru Hautvillers are always included in the famous prestige champagne and usually some of the 17 Grand Crus are missing from the DP. The first vintage of this expensive and exclusive magnum is fittingly in 2017. The highly regarded growers are Secondé-Simon (Ambonnay), Franck Bonville (Avize), Richard Fliniaux (Aÿ), Paul Sadi (Beaumont-sur-Vesle), Barnaut (Bouzy ), Legras & Haas (Chouilly), Pertois-Lebrun (Oiry and Cramant), Paul Launois (Le Mesnil-sur-Oger), Guy de Chassey (Louvois), Ernest Remy (Mailly), Chapuy (Oger), Francois Secondé ( Puisieulx and Sillery), Lamiable (Tours-sur-Marne), Sabine Godmé (Verzenay) and Juillet-Lallement (Verzy). Everyone has contributed exactly 1/17 part which they placed in a common wine press. Thus, the cuvée is created naturally in the press. The entire process from pressing to labeling takes place in Avize. The wine is still a little wild, but incredibly concentrated and rich. Young showy fruit from the quince, via pear and hawthorn to apricot and leather. Chardonnay is doing just as well as Pinot Noir at the moment despite the strong numerical preponderance of the blue grape variety. Here is a buttery and silky created texture that impresses. It will be so exciting to follow the development and see which parts of the composition will take command going forward. Currently, Le Mesnil, Ambonnay and Verzenay are sleeping, but that may change. In retrospect, I tried to say which village the composition came to resemble the most. Cumières, our powerful Premier Cru that is not even in the blend, was the unexpected and somewhat exciting answer. Geographically, it is in any case right in the center of the cuvée and maybe the sum of all Grand Cru's, what do I know?

Tasting note
We had the bright and bold idea of creating our own vintage in 2017. We wanted to blend the 17 Grands Crus of Champagne in a never-before-seen and extraordinary feat for our region. What makes it even more unique is that the idea came from 15 vine growers providing fruit from their own production. We blend the grapes from each of the outstanding terroirs once picked to make a 4000kg marc in a traditional press. The wine is packed full of passion, love for the land, communication and discussion among our association’s fifteen members and made exclusively in limited numbers of magnums as vintages. This bottle was a natural choice as it helps the wine age and the aromas to come into their own.
Tasting a C17 magnum is an experience, it’s a magical moment. The radiant buttercup hue gives you a hint of the aromas it has in store. It’s crisp and mature on the nose, bursting with juicy stone fruit, peach, quince, apricot and mirabelle plum with the indulgent nutty aromas of frangipane and hazelnut. It’s vibrant and full-bodied on the palate with ripe citrus reigning supreme before the soothing tropical yet spicy notes of vanilla, passion fruit and roasted almond wash over you. The heady, sharp and zesty finish lingers on the palate. Wine and food pairing: squash soup with double cream, cardamom seeds and soft-poached egg, garnished with ground coffee beans and mimolette cheese shavings (recipe taken from Fûts et foudres de la Champagne by Philippe Mille, chef at the 2 Michelin-starred Les Crayères)
