Orange rind and spices, such as cardamom on the nose, together with sourdough and fresh fig . Some salted butter, too. It's creamy, supple and silky, with a salty freshness. Soft bubbles. Long and chalky finish. 100% chardonnay from 90-year-old vines. Base wine fermented in stainless steel. Only made in exceptional vintages. Disgorged after 15 years on lees with 5g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

The 2008 Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Les Chétillons Cuvée Nicole VV Extra Brut was tasted from magnum, offering a seductive bouquet with delicate, smoky wet stones, preserved lemon peel, crisp yellow apples, and fresh chamomile. Medium-bodied, it has fabulous concentration and balanced length, with a long, persistent, and refreshing spine of acidity flowing through a lengthy finish. It features a fine, pinpoint mousse that enhances the wine's energy. It’s fabulous now, but it’s structured for the long haul over the next two decades. As it opens in the glass, the palate softens just enough to provide a delicate, creamy mousse and a supple, silky texture of citrus oils. Disgorged in December 2024 with 5 grams per liter dosage. Drink 2026-2050.

A consistent darling of the critics, the superb champagnes of Pierre Moncuit are currently overseen by Nicole Moncuit and her brother Yves. Established as recently as 1977, they have risen to the top rank among celebrated growers, their wines complex and age-worthy, and yet, at the same time, inviting, fleshy and offering masses of pleasure. A small house, it primarily produces fabulous Blanc de Blancs Champagne from Le Mesnil – one of only six 100% rated Grand Cru villages in the Cote de Blancs, home to the likes of Salon and Krug’s Clos du Mesnil, and where the Moncuits possess a number of fine Grand Cru vineyards, including the excellent and much-prized Les Chétillons. Much aligned with Antonio Galloni recent thoughts on terroir-driven wines from Champagne’s small producers, the Pierre Moncuit range is entirely estate grown, demonstrating that grower Champagnes can offer a level of individuality beyond the larger houses.
