A very pure wine with distinctive character from mineral in the soil of Le Mesnil. That the wine is as dry as tinder does not matter in the least since the fruitiness balances the stringency in a beautiful way.

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru displays a luminous citrus color followed by a reductive yet intense bouquet with a concentrated lemon and chalky expression intertwined with fresh popcorn notes. Pure and fresh on the palate, with lemon and prominent chalky flavors, this is a full-bodied, complex, very elegant and refined yet pure and vital Blanc de Blancs with a persistent chalky and salty finish. Provided with a firm structure, this is an impressive Blanc de Blancs to be served as an aperitif but also with seafood and white fish. Tasted August 2018.

Here are three excellent cuvées from De Saint Gall, a brand of the meta-cooperative Union de Champagne, an union of 12 co-ops that control 40% of the vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, two-thirds of which are from Grand Cru villages. At least the vintaged cuvée Orpale is worth a try, but in general, the Blanc de Blancs are highly recommended.

The NV Extra Brut Le Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs that spent just over five years on lees. Lemon, wet chalk and fresh Genoese sponge create a breezy, fresh and enticing nose. The palate is light, bright and full of verve and elegance. The lemony mousse is fine and lively, swirling clear-cut freshness on this lip-smacking wine. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 2023.

Mineral-toned orchard fruit and raw almonds define the restrained, precise nose. The palate is saline and sharp, bone-dry in feel, holding a chalky, energetic line all the way through the finish. Drink or hold.
