For me one of the absolute 'banker' Grand Marque Champagnes, of excellent quality and yet widely available and often on discount. Shop around to find it for £25 or so, but until 2nd January 2021 it is just £21 in Tesco and that is bargain central. It's a superbly refined blend of mostly black grapes, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with 15% - 20% of Chardonnay and 9 - 10g/l of dosage. Around 10% -20% reserve wines give depth and a certain biscuity richness, but it is a direct, focused wine with wonderfully clear fresh-cut pear fruit quality and pristine acidity. There is nuttiness and a fine line of smokiness into a long tapering finish that is very elegant, classy, but also fruity and terribly easy to drink.
Falstaff
Attractively fruity nose of raspberries, baked apples, pie crust and lemon curd. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and lively bubbles. Very clean. 2019 base wine with 32% reserve wine. 40% pinot noir, 39% meunier and 21% chardonnay. 9g/L dosage. From organically grown grapes with Ecocert certification. Drink now.

Piper and Charles Heidsieck have now been sister houses owned by EPI since 2011, but little seems to have changed as a result, except economically, as each continues with its own image. Piper’s entry-level Brut, blending the three traditional varieties, has never been a world-beater, but it is one of the best Champagnes that can be purchased in this price range. It has very nicely blended green-fruit flavors and intensity, halfway between being elegant and robust, with an enjoyable metallic minerality finish.

A blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, including 30% of reserve wines, Piper-Heidsieck’s NV Brut Cuvée was disgorged with eight grams per liter. From the very first whiff, there are surprisingly compelling scents of red berries, pear and peach, biscuits and autolyze scents. The palate is balanced, light to medium-bodied and elegantly fleshy with a fresh finish.

The NV Champagne Cuvée Brut is ripe and inviting, with toasty notes of espresso. The base is 2021, which was a small harvest, so this contains a high amount of reserve in the blend. Full-bodied, it’s structured and inviting – classic Piper, but with the amplitude of 25% Chardonnay and 40% reserve wine. The 9% non-malolactic wine was influenced by citrus notes in Pinot and black grapes, offering fresh citrus and crispness.
Emilien Boutillat took over as Chef de Cave at Piper-Heidsieck for Régis Camus in 2018. A native of Champagne, Mr. Boutillat has a versatile background in winemaking, having worked for several wineries worldwide, including prestigious estates such as Château Margaux in Bordeaux and Peter Michael in Sonoma, California. He also spent time in Chile, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Franschhoek, South Africa, where he produced Cap Classique (sparkling wines).
