Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Crafted exclusively with Chardonnay planted in the terroir of Avize, the 2016 Grand Cru Millésime from Franck Bonville offers up delicate aromas of white peach, pear, spring flowers and spices mingled with menthol. Medium to full-bodied, round and enveloping with a vinous core of fruit and a delicate, pure and crystalline texture, it's long and sappy, concluding with a mineral, iodine-inflected finish. Disgorged with a dosage of two grams per liter.
This house in the commune of Avize (Côte des Blancs) produces bright, fresh and finely crafted Champagnes that truly impressed me. Olivier Bonville, who took over the family estate in 1996, has an exceptional ability to express the unique character of each commune and terroir, a testament to his meticulous work in the vineyard and the cellar. A strong advocate of aging Champagnes under cork for several years before release, Olivier ensures that the houses Champagnes are always marked by their finesse, purity and tension, displaying elegance and refinement.
With his son-in-law, Ferdinand Ruelle, Olivier Bonville founded a separate lineup from purchased grapes: Odyssée 319.

If I didn't know how well and wonderfully Bonville develops over time, I wouldn't have been filled with such confidence as I do when I encounter this faintly scented creation. Here, the greatness is completely hidden in the supple bosom of the structure. Dense, buttery, crunchy and seamlessly concentrated and finely balanced, but incredibly unredeemed and low-dimensional at the moment. Hence the relatively low current score.
Tasting note
The Millésime 2016 – Grand Cru – Blanc de Blancs reveals the full potential of great Champagne wines and the slow, delicate evolution of Chardonnay. We envision this wine as a testament to its vintage, reflecting the climatic conditions and the energy invested in crafting our interpretation of that year. 2016 was once again an atypical year, during which, in a rare occurrence, the Chardonnays from the Côte des Blancs were harvested after the Pinots
