From the heart of La Côte de Blancs, the NV Champagne Brut is based on the 2021 vintage and features a classic blend of 60% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and the remainder Meunier grown on chalky soils at different orientations and altitudes. A brilliant pale yellow hue, it’s very pretty on the nose, with inviting aromas of green apples, pears, and citrus. The 2021 vintage offers good freshness and bright acidity, along with nice tension. Open and approachable, with notes of fresh flowers and citrus blossoms as well as the mouthwatering crispness of Pinot Noir, it has a lively, fine mousse, a pithy, chalky texture, and a clean, powdery finish. It’s ready to enjoy as an aperitif now and will drink well over the next 10 years.
The sister house to Salon, Delamotte owns 10 hectares of vineyards in Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Cramant, and Avize. They purchase grapes from 80 hectares, mostly Chardonnay from Oiry and Chouilly, as well as some Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims in Bouzy, Ambonnay, and Tours-sur-Marne. A small amount of Meunier is purchased from around Epernay. When Salon does not produce a vintage wine, those parcels are used in the production of Delamotte bottlings. Like Salon, the wines are fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel; however, malolactic fermentation is achieved on a case-by-case basis.

The new release of the NV Brut, based on the 2019 vintage and with 15% reserve wines from 2018 and 2017, is the only wine in Delamotte’s range (except for the rosé, of course) that features some red grapes. Informed by a high-maturity vintage, it is rich and inviting, opening from the glass with scents of peach, cherry and toasted bread. Medium to full-bodied and ample, with a sweet core of fruit, it is demonstrative out of the gates. However, in the context of the concentrated base vintage, I wonder if it fully captures all the quality that could be theirs. It was disgorged in early 2023 with eight grams per liter dosage.

Tasting note
In a bottle of our Brut, an orchestra of three grape varieties plays a particularly balanced score. The 60% Chardonnay content forms the backbone of its structure while the 35% Pinot Noir from Tours-sur-Marne, Bouzy and Ambonnay give it depth and fruit. The 5% Pinot Meunier perfects these harmonies with aromatic density. Without ever assaulting the palate, this is a beautifully powerful champagne. Freshness and roundness merge to deliver a clean, fruity finish, with well-balanced and elegant length on the palate. A light dosage is added to Delamotte Brut champagne after thirty-six months’ maturation on the lees, as is the case for the entire Delamotte range.

The wine team - Salon
Since its acquisition in 1988 by Laurent-Perrier, Delamotte has been twinned with Salon, one of Champagne's most famous small houses. Delamotte has both gained and lost by the association: gained, in that some of Salon's reputation has rubbed off on Delamotte, and lost, because Delamotte is frequently portrayed—though not by the house's team, of course—as something of a "second wine" to Salon. In tastings, Delamotte is usually considered inferior compared to Salon, which is typically served immediately afterward.
Both houses are Chardonnay specialists emphasizing their home village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. However, Delamotte is not a pure Mesnil but a blend from several villages in the Côte des Blancs. Delamotte's wines undergo full malolactic fermentation and, in profile, are creamy, textural and generous, often displaying an elegantly autolytic character. Since 2005, the wines have been made by Michel Fauconnet, who serves as the cellar master for both houses.
Delamotte owns 12 hectares but sources fruit from an additional 108 hectares. That said, they do not control the farming decisions for the 90% of fruit supplied by growers. Average production amounts to around 750,000 bottles per year, and the estate's emblematic cuvées are its non-vintage and vintage Blanc de Blancs. The latter, in particular, is a serious wine that improves as it ages; and late-disgorged versions—disgorged with minimal or no dosage—are often even better, though quality varies depending on the vintage.
