The De Sousa Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee de Caudiles L03C03 – based on old vines, and named for an obscure (dare I suggest “alleged”?!) unit for measuring palate persistence – represents a departure from the rest of their line for being vinified and aged entirely in barrels, 15% of which were new, and incorporates as its reserve component a solera-like perpetual cuvee begun in 1995. This bottling shares with its “regular” Blanc de Blancs counterpart a sappy, tart-edged concentration of crabapple and pineapple near the core. Once again, too, it is palpably dense yet buoyant and luscious, yet focused in its long finish, not to mention tangy and invigorating. Saliva-liberating salinity and piquant, profound nuttiness (no doubt thanks to the reserve wine component) enhance the mouthwatering and energetic impression conveyed by this cuvee, which is likely to perform admirably for several more years.
"Cuvée des Caudalies" is yet another testament to the consistent quality of his production.
This blanc de blancs is vinified entirely in oak barrels. The grapes come from vines over 50 years old.
We used a perpetual reserve made in 1995 for the blend of this wine.
Tasting note
Pale gold. The nose is elegant, delicately punctuated by woody aromas. This polished Champagne offers creamy texture and harmonious structure. The wood notes are present but well integrated. Enjoy this distinguished blanc de blancs as an aperitif with caviar toasts. It's also excellent with a thick slice of turbot, shellfish in Champagne jelly, etc.
