2017 was a wet and difficult year with few good champagnes. Richard Geoffroy's last vintage could not be anything but a success and the recipe was above all a minimal edition of concentrated wines in the cuvée in a similar way to the now legendary 2003. Bouzy, which ripens early, coped well with the rain and became the dominant village for Pinot Noir. 61% Chardonnay is a record amount, with the lion's share coming from Le Coteau de Saran and Le Revers de Plume Coq in Chouilly. The champagne is bold and charming with high concentration and great maturity. The aroma is filled with roasted and slightly smoky elements, where gunpowder smoke, coffee and pine nuts are most evident. The fruit is as usual very multifaceted with stone fruits in the driver's seat backed by forest mushrooms and nougat. The texture is elaborately built up in a masterful way as usual and the palate is almost sensual.

Of the two releasesthe 2017 and the 2018the 2017 Dom Pérignon is the deeper and more structurally endowed wine, unfurling from the glass with a complex bouquet of orange peel, dried apricot and burnt buttered toast, mingling with nuances of dried flowers, toasted hazelnut and cacao bean, all strongly singed with the houses signature smoky reduction. On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with a rich core of fruit. Its darker, open-knit profile is animated by a pillowy mousse, vibrant acidity and attractively bitter, structuring phenolics that assert themselves on a long, resonant finish. This is a superb achievement for a vintage that required uncompromising selection, as acetic rot began to intrude upon the Pinot Noir grapes despite otherwise favorable conditions until mid-August. The fact that it represents the smallest Dom Pérignon release by volume should not mislead readers into complacency; indeed, I would much sooner own several bottles of the 2017 than divide my allocation with the 2018. A blend of 61% Chardonnay and 39% Pinot Noir, it was disgorged in March 2024 with a dosage of five grams per liter and will offer considerable complexity and generosity out of the gates.

An edgy Dom Perignon with intense and singular aromas of lemons, toast and botanicals. Medium-bodied with a dense center palate and a vivid and rocking finish. Tight, muscular bubbles frame this nicely. Tense. Developing well in the bottle. 62% chardonnay and 38% pinot noir. 4.5 g/L dosage. Drink now or hold.
Vinous
The 2017 Dom Pérignon is just as stunning as it was last year, if not more so. What a wine! Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers and chalk soar out of the glass. The 2017 is like a slightly more refined version of the 2002, another year in which the Chardonnays were quite opulent. In 2017, Chardonnay accounts for 61% of the blend, very high for Dom Pérignon. Over the last year, the 2017 has gained mid-palate creaminess and has just come together beautifully. Sadly, production is tiny, so much so that the 2017 is expected to be in the market for just a few months before the maison transitions to the 2018.

I Aube ännu mer!

Overview: A poor year, with rain and rot at harvest
An unusually dry winter preceded the campaign of 2017, with 30% less precipitation than average. There were several weeks right after budbreak from the end of March through mid-April that saw a series of severe spring frosts, with twelve nights of hard frost that affected nearly the entire region. From mid-April, however, conditions improved, and fine weather returned.
May and June were slightly hotter than average, but rain returned in July. The balance of the month was hot and very wet, ultimately rainier than any other year since 2001. The rain continued into August, but the temperature dropped. The main difficulty in 2017 was grey rot in the vineyard, which began in July and intensified in August. In some areas, the grey rot developed into sour rot. Overall, Chardonnay was least damaged by this problem because of its thicker skin. Approximately 20% of the region was affected by rot in 2017. As with many years with grey rot and sour rot, Drosophila flies were an issue in 2017. The fruit ripened only with difficulty, and the harvest was very late. The quantity of gluconic acid was the highest of the decade thus far. Given the health of the grapes, an exceptionally intense sorting took place during the harvest. Few of the vins clairs that I tasted in the Spring of 2018 were truly exciting. I always hold out hope of some interesting wines, but in general, it seems likely that few if any vintage wines will be made and the best one can hope for from this year is to provide suitable base wines for the non-vintage blends.
