Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2018 Pur Avize Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is showing well today with a more mineral, chalky character than Pur Oger. It reveals aromas of ripe orchard fruits, chalk, flowers, lemon oil and citrus. Medium to full-bodied, crystalline and pure on the palate, it is vinous and round, with a fleshy core of fruit, bright acids, a pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish enhanced by gastronomic bitterness. Dosage: 3.3. grams per liter.
This house in the commune of Avize (Côte des Blancs) produces bright, fresh and finely crafted Champagnes that truly impressed me. Olivier Bonville, who took over the family estate in 1996, has an exceptional ability to express the unique character of each commune and terroir, a testament to his meticulous work in the vineyard and the cellar. A strong advocate of aging Champagnes under cork for several years before release, Olivier ensures that the houses Champagnes are always marked by their finesse, purity and tension, displaying elegance and refinement.
With his son-in-law, Ferdinand Ruelle, Olivier Bonville founded a separate lineup from purchased grapes: Odyssée 319.

2000 bottles of each from Oger, Avize and Mesnil. It would be sacrilege to do anything other than traste the entire trio of Pur wines side by side. In 2018 they are more similar to each other than before, so we have to assume that the stamp of the vintage dominates over the terroir this time. All three of them have a deliciously refreshing and showy airy fruit that is absolutely wonderful from the start. They are also more impressive in taste than in smell altogether. Lots of tangerine, sweet lemon and orange in the mouth. Oger or Avize are not obvious in this edition. Maybe there is a slightly more distinguished chalk in Avize anyway?
Tasting note
Pur Avize 2018 is presented to you after over 5 years of ageing “sous liège” in our cellars. This cuvee is a blend of 3 parcels from the heart of the Avize terroir that surrounds the village; it's a “Bonville” interpretation of this renowned village that we offer.
